Channel 4 has this evening aired their programme 'The Murder Trial', where for the first time, cameras have been given access to a criminal trial. The trial revolves around a husband who is accused of his wife's murder after her disappearance amidst divorce proceedings. Putting the case itself to one side, the prospect of having TV cameras in our court rooms across the UK is one that should send shivers of fear throughout the legal profession. I can see the possible benefits of perhaps recording the sentencing, which can be then be broadcast, but to have full coverage of cases threatens the dignity of our legal system. Before long, we will see lighting rigs, make-up artists, celebrity lawyers with lucrative advertising deals, the horrendous list of possibilities is endless!
